Steroids use symptoms

An undetermined percentage of steroid abusers may become addicted to the drugs, as evidenced by their continued abuse despite physical problems and negative effects on social relations. Also, steroid abusers typically spend large amounts of time and money obtaining the drugs, which is another indication that they may be addicted. Individuals who abuse steroids can experience withdrawal symptoms when they stop taking steroids, such as mood swings, fatigue, restlessness, loss of appetite, insomnia, reduced sex drive, and steroid cravings. The most dangerous of the withdrawal symptoms is depression, because it sometimes leads to suicide attempts. If left untreated, some depressive symptoms associated with anabolic steroid withdrawal have been known to persist for a year or more after the abuser stops taking the drugs.

This is an antibiotic that has figured prominently in recent news items about cases of Duchenne due to premature "stop codons." In these cases the complete gene for dystrophin is never "decoded" or translated so that this critical muscle protein is not made, or at least not made in full form. Research on mdx mice that simulate human Duchenne has shown that when gentamycin is administered, the premature stop codon is somehow ignored so that the entire gene transcript can be "read" and dystrophin can be produced. A preliminary trial on Duchenne young men is underway, and hopes are high that this will work in humans as well as it did in the model mice. Unfortunately, this treatment would only work for those instances (about 10% of all Duchenne cases) in which the gene defect is a premature stop codon.

Most modern steroid enemas are foam based - as the likelihood of someone with colitis being able to retain a water based enema is quite low. These act topically applying the steroid directly to the colon - with only small amounts being absorbed into the bloodstream. This makes side effects less likely. The downside is that they can only reach the descending colon and rectum - so for those with extensive colitis oral steroids may be needed. A combination of Entocort and steroid enemas can provide topical treatment to the majority of the colon - again minimizing side effects. As the two main steroid enemas differ quite greatly I will cover them separately.

Women - On the other hand, women often experience a "masculinization" effect from anabolic steroids, including the following:

  • Facial hair growth
  • Deepened voice
  • Breast reduction
  • Menstrual cycle changes
With continued use of anabolic steroids, both sexes can experience the following effects, which range from the merely unsightly to the life endangering. They include:
  • Acne
  • Bloated appearance
  • Rapid weight gain
  • Clotting disorders
  • Liver damage
  • Premature heart attacks and strokes
  • Elevated cholesterol levels
  • Weakened tendons
